Enoch’s Promotion

Seth Byle

Enoch sat in his cabin in the pine forest on the side of a mountain, writing details of his visions and all that had transpired during his long 365 years of life. Then suddenly, he felt a pleasant tingling sensation flowing through his body, followed by a feeling of immense joy, and the air filled with a sweet fragrance. He stood up and turned around. There she was—stoic eyes of aquamarine, shining golden hair like rays of the sun, and a light, silky dress dancing with power. She had soft, ethereal wings and rings of light around her head. She was the most beautiful woman he had ever seen, but she wasn’t really a woman. She wasn’t even human.

“Who are you?” he asked.

“I am Haniel, and I have an important message for you. As a reward for your unwavering righteousness, you will be taken into Heaven without tasting death. Come with me, Enoch, step outside, and we shall begin our ascent.”

Enoch was speechless as his heart pounded. He was nervous but could not refuse such a wonderful blessing. Hands shaking, he took her hand, and they stepped outside.

“Hold on tight,” said Haniel as she wrapped her arms around him. Then, the moment she lowered her wings from their raised position, he was passing through ice crystals in the upper atmosphere, which, at that speed, would have torn him apart had she not shielded him with her light and grace. She raised and dropped her wings again, and the planets flashed by in the blink of an eye, and the sun appeared to be a distant star. Had her grace not sustained him, he would not have been able to breathe and would have frozen to death in the vacuum of space. Again, she stroked her wings, and he watched as stars and nebulas flashed by in an instant until they left the edge of the galaxy. Then her wings fell again, and countless galaxies streaked past them, and all of a sudden, everything went dark. There was nothing—no stars, planets, or dust. The only light to be seen was Haniel. They were alone, outside of the universe. Then she dropped her wings one final time, and everything was consumed by a golden light.

He squinted his eyes, unable to see anything through such radiance, but he could smell flowers and hear beautiful singing in the distance. Then, as the light dimmed, he looked down and saw the magnificence of Heaven, as Haniel soared over countless golden spires and gem-encrusted mansions until they entered the grand tower. There were countless magnificent celestial beings all around them, including the likes of Michael, Gabriel, Raphael, Uriel, and many more. But then he saw the Seraphim surrounding the Throne of Grace, endlessly singing His praises. From the Throne, a light was emitted so bright and hot that Enoch would have been instantly vaporized had Haniel not shielded him with her wings, but even so, he could feel the intensity of the power surrounding him.

Then for a moment, the angels all fell silent and kneeled. Heaven trembled as their Master began to speak.

“Enoch, you have served me faithfully and remained a profoundly righteous man, even during a time of unspeakable wickedness. You have recorded the evils of your age with great clarity so that future generations may learn lessons from the horrors of the Watchers and the grave transgressions of humanity, as well as the heroism of the Archangels. As a reward, I will grant you the highest honor. You will be my Scribe here in Heaven. You will sit in my presence and record everything—the good and the bad.”

“My Lord, this is an honor that words cannot describe. Yes, I swear to serve you faithfully and record all the secrets of the universe.”

With that, Enoch felt his body expanding immensely until he was larger than the entire earth. God then blessed him with one million three hundred sixty-five thousand blessings. Then suddenly, he felt his body being transformed into flames, his eyes became torches, and his eyebrows were lightning bolts. He was then given seventy-two wings, each larger than the entire earth, and three hundred and sixty-five eyes.

“Enoch, you are a man no more… Now you are an Archangel and shall henceforth be known as Metatron.”

“Thank you, my Lord. This is a great honor. I promise I will serve you for all of eternity,” said Metatron.

“And so, you shall,” said God as He handed Metatron the radiant Book of Life and a quill crafted from the feather of a Seraph. And then, he began his writing. Transformed into the Scribe of God, he now had access to all the universe’s knowledge—of all things that were, are, and are to come—and he wrote it all down. His quill hovered across the pages of the Book of Life faster than the speed of light. Flashes of light and sparks danced off the celestial paper in a fiery display of magnificence. And so he began to record everything, from the course of every electron to the birth and death of every star. He recorded God’s first companions, the angels, among whom he was now counted. He recorded the moment his Master sparked the Big Bang and brought in the glory of creation.

He recorded the formation of the first stars and galaxies, including a star scientists would one day name after his son, “The Methuselah Star.” He recorded the birth of the Sun, the collisions of space debris that formed the molten Earth, and the impact that splashed basalt off the Earth, forming the Moon. He recorded the cooling of the Earth, the formation of the oceans, and the first spark of life. He wrote down the stories of the first multicellular organisms and when life first crawled onto land. He documented all of the mass extinction events and the rise and fall of the dinosaurs. He wrote about the emergence of mammals and how a branch of primates began to take on the image of his Master.

He recorded the fall of man and Adam and Eve being banished from the Garden. He wrote of his own story as the man Enoch and the terror of the Watchers. He wrote of his own transformation into Metatron.

Then he wrote about Abraham and Moses. He wrote about Elijah, who, like him, was also taken into Heaven and transformed into his brother, the Archangel Sandalphon, the angel of music and prayer.

He wrote about the time Gabriel visited a young girl named Mary with an important message. From there, he recorded the birth, death, and resurrection of Christ, and at that moment, something special happened. The sins of humanity began to disappear from his recording in the Book of Life, as souls were redeemed and Heaven-bound. He wrote about how the Romans abandoned their idols and began worshipping his Master.

He recorded all the Chinese Dynasties, the wonders of the Egyptians, and the adventures of the Mayans, Aztecs, and Incas. He wrote tales of knights in shining armor and the development of gunpowder. He wrote of Christopher Columbus and the day Martin Luther nailed his Ninety-Five Theses to the church door. He recorded the American Revolution. He wrote of the Emancipation Proclamation and the freeing of slaves. He wrote of the Industrial Revolution and the success of the Wright Brothers when humanity learned to soar. He wrote of the horrors of the Holocaust, one of the darkest times in history, as well as the virtues of the Civil Rights Movement, detailing the bravery of Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King Jr. in their battle for equality. He wrote about the fall of the Berlin Wall and a controversial figure elected president in 2016.

But he didn’t stop there. He continued writing about everything that would ever happen, onwards until the end of days. As he wrote, he wept tears of both joy and sorrow, and he felt a profound understanding and compassion for humanity. He saw all their struggles, sins, and virtues, and now knew more of God’s plan than any other angel. He decided to guide humanity through their trials, providing wisdom and faith. And so, from the essence of his soul, he conjured a cube containing within it a double tetrahedron and thirteen spheres. He spun the cube around the whole universe and used it to bless all of humanity, lighting the way through all their trials. It became known as the “Cube of Metatron.” With the angelic presence of Metatron and the other angels, humanity had something to trust and hope to believe in.
